Storm Drain Video Inspection in Hilo
Before and after cleaning, a video inspection is crucial for storm drains in Hilo. Our cameras can travel through the drain lines, letting us accurately identify the type and location of blockages, assess pipe integrity, and confirm the results of our cleaning. This technology helps prevent unnecessary digging and ensures a precise solution, especially useful for diagnosing issues hidden underground. Some valleys and lowland areas have clay-rich soil that swells with heavy rain and can stress slabs, foundations, and buried pipes.
Emergency Storm Drain Clearing in Hilo
If water is pooling against your home during a storm, a clogged drain is often the cause. We respond to urgent calls to clear the blockage and get water flowing. In the moment, we focus on the inlet and pipe that are causing the flooding. Once the storm passes, we can clean the rest of the system. We also note any grading or drainage issues that made the problem worse.
Storm Drain Camera Inspection in Hilo
Before and after cleaning, or to diagnose the cause of persistent blockages, HKL Plumbing offers storm drain camera inspection in Hilo. Using waterproof cameras, we can visually inspect the interior of your storm drain lines to identify the exact nature and location of blockages, assess pipe condition, and check for structural damage like cracks or collapses. This non-invasive diagnostic tool gives precise problem identification and lets us provide the most effective and targeted cleaning or repair solutions.
Preventative Storm Drain Cleaning in Hilo, HI
Proactive cleaning is key to avoiding major issues with storm drains in Hilo, HI. We offer scheduled preventative maintenance to keep your drains clear of leaves, debris, and sediment throughout the year. Regular cleaning can prevent the buildup that leads to severe clogs and flooding during heavy rainy seasons, extending the lifespan of your drainage system and protecting your property investment.
Commercial Storm Drain Maintenance in Hilo, HI
For businesses in Hilo, HI, a clogged storm drain can mean lost operating time and possible liability from flooding. We offer full-service commercial storm drain cleaning, often involving larger diameter pipes and more extensive drainage networks. Our technicians are equipped to handle the demands of commercial properties, including parking lot drains and industrial runoff systems, supporting compliance with local environmental rules and uninterrupted operations.
Catch Basin Cleaning Services in Hilo
Catch basins are vital parts of many storm drainage systems in Hilo, designed to trap debris before it enters the main pipes. Over time, these basins can fill with leaves, trash, and sediment, reducing their effectiveness. Our service includes thoroughly cleaning out catch basins, removing built-up material so they work correctly and prevent blockages further down the storm drain line, especially important in areas with mature trees.
Storm Drain Cleaning Cost Versus Water Damage in Hilo, HI
A routine storm drain cleaning costs a small fraction of what it takes to dry out a flooded garage or repair a damaged slab. Many homeowners only call after water has already gotten in. Cleaning once a year, ideally before the rainy season, prevents most problems. If a pipe is crushed or disconnected, we can locate it with a camera and repair just that section. We give you clear pricing for both cleaning and repairs.
Residential Storm Drain Cleaning in Hilo
Homes in Hilo are especially vulnerable to storm drain issues due to changing weather and local landscaping. We clear leaves, twigs, silt, and other natural debris that can collect in residential storm drains, preventing rainwater from backing up into yards or foundations. Our service protects your home's perimeter and keeps water moving away from sensitive areas, especially during heavy rain. Hurricanes reach Hawaii only occasionally, but strong storms can still cause outages, flooding, and damage to outdoor plumbing and water heaters.

Frequently Asked Questions About Storm Drain Cleaning in Hilo
The cost of storm drain cleaning in Hilo usually ranges from $200 to $600, depending on the severity and type of blockage, the length of the drain, and the equipment required, such as hydro jetting or snaking. More complex issues like extensive root intrusion or collapsed pipes may cost more. We provide a clear, upfront estimate before starting any work.
We use a range of professional-grade equipment, including powerful hydro jetting machines that use high-pressure water to scour pipes, drain snakes with various cutting heads for root removal, and waterproof camera inspection systems to accurately diagnose issues and confirm thorough cleaning.
In Hilo, storm drains are often clogged by natural debris such as leaves, twigs, dirt, and silt, especially after heavy winds or storms. Other culprits include grass clippings, trash, sediment from construction, and sometimes even tree roots getting into older pipes. Some valleys and lowland areas have clay-rich soil that swells with heavy rain and can stress slabs, foundations, and buried pipes.
No. Storm drains carry rainwater only, while sewer lines carry wastewater from your fixtures. They should not be connected.
Our technicians are trained to service all types and brands of storm drain systems commonly found in residential and commercial properties. This includes standard PVC, corrugated HDPE, concrete, and cast iron drainpipes, as well as various types of catch basins and grates from manufacturers like NDS, ADS, and Zurn.
Typically, permits are not required for routine storm drain cleaning and maintenance. However, if the service involves excavation for major repairs or replacement of storm drain lines, then local Hilo building and plumbing permits may be necessary. HKL Plumbing handles all necessary permitting for larger projects.
In Hilo, common causes of storm drain clogs include built-up leaves, dirt, and organic debris from trees, silt and sediment from soil erosion, trash, and sadly, sometimes even illegally dumped waste. Tree root intrusion into the pipes is also a significant factor, especially in older systems.
Hydro jetting is a powerful drain cleaning method that uses high-pressure water streams to wash out stubborn blockages and thoroughly clean the interior of drain pipes. For storm drains, it is very effective at removing compacted soil, heavy silt, grease, and roots, restoring the drain to its full flow capacity much better than snaking.
